As if the mobile smartphone market was not already overpopulated enough, today brings another huge name into the game. Dell has entered the race with four new smartphones to hit the market in the coming months. All four phones seem like exciting options and will most definitely be competing with the big boys. Here are some of the details of the new Dell phones:

  • Flash: With no relation to the Adobe product, the Dell Flash is supposedly made of a slice of curved glass, with an 11mm thick body, and a 3.5 inch WVGA LCD screen. The Flash also has what has become the market standard 5 mp auto focus camera and high speed mobile broadband. The camera also supports image stabilization and smile / blink detection, a nice addition. The phone has 512MB of RAM and ROM with microSD expansion up to 64GB (does that even exist?), WiFi, TV-out, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 3.0, and a Qualcomm MSM7230 core humming along at 800MHz. Pretty darn impressive specs, especially since it is the low end of the all newly leaked Dell phones. Oh, did I mention it will be running on the next gen Android 2.2, AKA Froyo.
  • Smoke: With a portrait QWERTY keyboard, a Froyo OS, Qualcomm’s next-gen MSM7230 processor at 800MHz, a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, 14.4Mbps HSPA, microSD expansion to 32GB, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and dual-mic noise canceling tech in a 12mm package, this bad boy is said to be begetting the corporate audience. I personally am not a huge fan of the portrait keyboard, but there is no denying that this is one nice looking device…
  • Thunder: Running on Android 2.1 (how boring) and sporting a 4.1 inch WVGA OLED display- this phone supposedly has a nice Dell Stage interface adding the ability to integrate Facebook, Twitter, and other social platforms, plus the addition of Swype as the default text input method. Two exciting features of the Thunder are the support for Flash 10.2 and a standalone Hulu app. Other specs include a Snpadragon processor, which seem to be becoming pretty standard nowadays and an 8 mp shooter. Lastly, the huge news about the Thunder is the plan to add an LTW version at the end of 2011, now THAT is awesome.
  • Lightning: What seems to be the flagship Dell smartphone, the Lightning has all the specs you can imagine in a powerhouse of a phone. First of all, it runs Windows 7, so that is gonna be interesting… Also has a portrait slider full keyboard, and the specs as far as I know, are unprecedented. A 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor, WVGA 4.1-inch OLED display, AT&T and T-Mobile 3G, five megapixel autofocus camera, 1GB of flash with 512MB RAM plus 8GB of storage on a MicroSD card, GPS, accelerometer, compass, FM radio, and full Flash support including video playback.  This phone, just like the Thunder will get an LTE version at the end of 2011.

Looks like Dell wanted to make a dramatic entrance, and in my opinion, they have succeeded. All these phones seem exciting and are sure to add some serious alternatives to smartphones like the iPhone, Nexus, HTC Incredible, and all the other high end devices announced recently.
